IDF and small server rooms: facility considerations beyond IT
Published
Cooling, power, and water proximity matter as much as switches. Facility and IT teams should share a short checklist for these spaces.
Edge rooms fail quietly—until they do not
Many outages trace to overheating, clogged filters, or failed room units in closets nobody visits monthly. Facility maintenance can prevent those failures if scope is explicit.
Shared checklist between IT and facilities
- Temperature trends and alarm testing—not just “feels cool today.”
- Filtration and coil care appropriate to small enclosed volumes.
- Water and roof proximity risk with mitigation if the room sits under wet zones.
Access and change control
When vendors enter IDF spaces, document who changed what. Simple close-out notes reduce mysterious cable damage and HVAC tampering that causes chronic instability.
